The best of Rabat

01Morning

Morning — Kasbah of the Udayas

Start early at the 12th-century Almohad kasbah above the Bou Regreg. Enter by the monumental Bab Oudaia gate, wander the blue-and-white lanes, pause in the Andalusian Gardens and take in the Atlantic view from the platform before the crowds build. Allow about 90 minutes.

02Morning

Mid-morning — Hassan Tower & Mausoleum of Mohammed V

A short drive or 25-minute riverside walk leads to the unfinished 44-metre Hassan Tower and the rows of stone columns beside it. Facing it, the Mausoleum of Mohammed V showcases carved cedar, zellij and a green-tiled roof, with royal guards at the gates. Entry is free; allow an hour.

03Lunch

Lunch — Ville Nouvelle or the medina edge

Break near Avenue Mohammed V in the French-era Ville Nouvelle, or at a cafe by the medina's seafront ramparts. The capital's calmer pace makes a relaxed sit-down lunch easy before the afternoon.

04Afternoon

Afternoon — Chellah Necropolis

On a garden hillside at the city's edge, Chellah layers the Roman town of Sala Colonia with a 14th-century Merinid necropolis of minaret, mosque and tombs, with storks nesting on the ruins. It is Rabat's most atmospheric site; allow an hour, ideally in the softer late-afternoon light.

05Afternoon

Late afternoon — Rabat Medina & Rue des Consuls

Walk the walled old town between the kasbah and the new city. Quieter than Fes or Marrakech, it centres on the Rue des Consuls craft street for carpets, leather and textiles, ending near the seafront walls.

06Evening

Sunset — Bou Regreg Marina or the city beach

Finish along the Bou Regreg marina looking back at the kasbah ramparts, or below the walls where the city beach meets the Atlantic surf. Small boats still ferry passengers across to Salé as the light fades.

Frequently asked

Can you see Rabat in one day?

Yes. Rabat's main monuments — the Kasbah of the Udayas, Hassan Tower, Mausoleum of Mohammed V, Chellah and the medina — are close together and walkable, so a single well-paced day covers the highlights comfortably.

What is the best order to visit Rabat's sights?

Start at the Kasbah of the Udayas early, then the Hassan Tower and Mausoleum of Mohammed V, lunch in the Ville Nouvelle, the Chellah necropolis in the afternoon light, the medina, and finish at the Bou Regreg marina or city beach at sunset.

Is Rabat a good day trip from Casablanca?

Very much so. Frequent trains link Casablanca and Rabat in around an hour, making the capital an easy and rewarding day trip with time for all the major monuments.
