Why Essaouira
Essaouira (Mogador on old maps) is the most rewarding stop on the Atlantic littoral that runs south from Rabat — the same wind-scoured coast as the capital, but framed by 18th-century Portuguese ramparts and a small blue-and-white medina far gentler than the imperial-city crowds. It sits some way down the coast (an easy run via Casablanca or a transfer through the argan country), and for travellers basing themselves in the calm capital it makes an ideal coastal counterpoint: fishing boats, a kite-surf beach, the argan-oil road and the oyster lagoons of Oualidia partway between the two.
What to see
Portuguese-built cannon walls overlooking the Atlantic, used as the city of Astapor in Game of Thrones.
Pick fish off the morning's catch and have it grilled in front of you at the port stalls — Morocco's freshest seafood, no question.
Visit a women's co-op on the road in from Marrakech and see argan oil pressed by hand from the kernels.
Long empty beaches south, and an oyster-farming lagoon north.

An overnight is much better — it sits well down the Atlantic coast from Rabat and a same-day return leaves you only a few hours on the ramparts. Two nights lets you enjoy the medina, the fishing port and the argan road at a proper pace.
Yes, but it's windy and the Atlantic is cool year-round — the same ocean character as the capital's beaches, only breezier. For warmer, calmer water head south to Sidi Kaouki or further to Agadir.
