The capital's monuments
The most recognisable image of the capital, part of Rabat's UNESCO World Heritage listing. The Hassan Tower is the unfinished 44-metre minaret of an Almohad mosque begun in 1195 under Yacoub al-Mansour; across the esplanade, the white-marble Mausoleum of Mohammed V — carved cedar, onyx and zellige — is open to respectfully dressed visitors of all faiths and watched over by the royal guard.
Hassan Tower half-day tourThe oldest part of Rabat, perched where the Bouregreg meets the Atlantic. Enter through the carved Almohad gate Bab Oudaia (c. 1195), wander the blue-and-white lanes painted by Andalusian refugees, walk the ocean ramparts and the Andalusian Gardens, and finish with mint tea at the clifftop café looking across to Salé.

Beneath lies the Roman river port of Sala Colonia — forum, arch and baths; above, the 14th-century Merinid sultans built a walled royal necropolis with a leaning minaret now crowned by a stork's nest. A sunken garden, a saint's pool and clattering storks make it one of the most atmospheric places in Morocco.
