Things to do · Chefchaouen
Tucked into the Rif mountains about 200 km northeast of the capital, Chefchaouen is Morocco's famous blue town — a maze of lime-washed lanes in every shade of indigo, climbing toward green peaks. It is too far for a comfortable single day from Rabat, but it makes a perfect overnight or two-day escape into cooler, mountain air. Here is what to do in the blue city.

Chefchaouen's old town is washed in countless shades of blue, from pale sky to deep indigo, on walls, steps, doors and planters. Wandering its steep, photogenic lanes is the town's whole point and chief pleasure.
The shaded main square at the heart of the medina, ringed by cafés and overlooked by the red-walled kasbah and the octagonal minaret of the Grand Mosque — the natural place to sit and watch the town pass.
A 15th-century walled fortress on the main square, built by Moulay Ali ben Rachid, with shaded Andalusian gardens, a small ethnographic museum and a tower you can climb for rooftop views over the blue rooftops.
At the medina's upper edge, this clear mountain spring tumbles over rocks where locals still wash clothes. A short walk from the square, it is a cool, green spot and the gateway to walks in the hills above town.
A short uphill walk leads to the hilltop Spanish Mosque, the classic vantage point over the whole blue town spread below the Rif peaks — unbeatable at sunset.
Chefchaouen is a base for hiking in Talassemtane National Park, including trails toward the dramatic God's Bridge rock arch and the Akchour waterfalls a short drive away.
The town is known for woven woollen blankets, goat's-cheese, and handicrafts in natural dyes. Workshops and small shops in the medina sell textiles and goods you see less of elsewhere in Morocco.
At around 200 km and 3.5 hours from Rabat, Chefchaouen rewards at least one night, ideally combined with Tangier or Tetouan to the north for a fuller northern loop from the capital.
Chefchaouen is about 200 km northeast of Rabat in the Rif mountains, roughly a 3.5-hour drive. Because of the distance and winding mountain roads, it is best visited as an overnight rather than a single-day trip.
It is possible but not recommended — the round trip is around seven hours of driving, leaving little time in town. An overnight stay, or pairing Chefchaouen with Tangier or Tetouan, makes for a far better experience.
The blue wash is most often linked to the town's Jewish community, who painted walls in shades of indigo in the 20th century. Today it is maintained as the town's signature look and a major draw for visitors.
Beyond the blue lanes, you can explore the 15th-century kasbah, relax in Plaza Uta el-Hammam, walk to the Ras el-Maa waterfall and the Spanish Mosque viewpoint, and hike in the surrounding Rif mountains and Talassemtane park.
