One of Rabat's quiet advantages is that it sits on Morocco's main north–south railway, the spine of the ONCF network, so its stations — Rabat-Ville and Rabat-Agdal — make superb springboards. The two standout rail trips pull in opposite directions. South-west lies Casablanca, barely 50 minutes away on frequent fast trains, where the unmissable draw is the Hassan II Mosque rising out of the Atlantic, backed by the Art Deco downtown and the Habous quarter. East lies Fes, around 2.5 hours away, where the train deposits you within reach of Fes el-Bali — 9,000 car-free lanes, the Al-Qarawiyyin university and the Chouara tanneries. Casablanca is the effortless half-day; Fes is the immersive full day or, better, an overnight. Both start with a simple walk to a Rabat platform.
