Volubilis, the best-preserved Roman site in Morocco, lies on a fertile plain near the holy town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun. Its mosaics, triumphal arch, basilica and Capitol have survived for nearly two thousand years, and it is an easy highlight of any northern itinerary — the question is where to launch from. From Rabat, Volubilis is roughly 140 km away, a workable day trip of around two hours' drive each way that usually means a private car or organised tour, since public transport is awkward. From Meknes, the ruins are barely 30 km off, making it the natural base: a short taxi or tour reaches the site, and you can easily fold in the whitewashed pilgrimage town of Moulay Idriss and Meknes's own imperial monuments. Both routes get you to the same extraordinary ruins; the difference is how much of your day the journey consumes — and how much else you can see.
