Why Meknes
Meknes is the most underrated of the imperial cities and one of the easiest deep-history stops from the capital — it sits on the same eastbound railway as Fes, so a Rabat base puts it within a comfortable train ride. Built by the 17th-century sultan Moulay Ismail (a contemporary of Louis XIV) to rival Versailles, it has monumental gates, the colossal Heri es-Souani granaries and stables, and a relaxed, lived-in medina with a fraction of Fes's crowds — a fitting match for a traveller who has come to appreciate Rabat's gentler pace. It is also the natural base for the Roman ruins of Volubilis and the holy hilltop town of Moulay Idriss, 30 minutes away.

Yes — it's the quietest and most relaxed of the imperial cities, with monumental gates and granaries and almost none of the medina hustle of Fes. Its calm suits travellers based in the equally unhurried capital, and paired with Volubilis it makes a superb day.
Meknes sits on the eastbound railway from the capital toward Fes — a comfortable train ride and an easy day or overnight from Rabat. Most travellers combine Meknes, Volubilis and Moulay Idriss in a single private day from the capital or from Fes.
