Rabat's monuments and the rail network beyond — Rabat Tours

Journal · Itinerary

What does a perfect 7 days based in Rabat actually look like?

One calm riad, no packing every night — the capital's monuments and river, plus easy train day trips to Casablanca, Meknès, Volubilis and Fes, broken down day by day.

Most Morocco itineraries are touring loops — a different bed every night and long days in the car. There is a calmer way. Rabat sits at the heart of the country's fast rail network, which means you can settle into one riad for a week and reach a different city or ruin each day by train. This is the itinerary we build for travellers who want depth and ease over distance covered.

Day 1 — Arrive in Rabat: settle in and slow down

Most flights or trains arrive by afternoon. Resist plunging straight into sightseeing. Let your riad receive you — a glass of mint tea, a roof terrace, dinner in the courtyard — and take an evening stroll along the seafront below the kasbah, where Rbatis gather at sunset. This first evening sets the unhurried tempo of the week. Your host or driver-guide will walk you in from the nearest landmark if your riad is deep in the medina.

Day 2 — Rabat: the kasbah, the medina and the river

Start early at the Kasbah of the Udayas, through the Almohad gate of Bab Oudaia into the blue-and-white lanes, the Andalusian Garden and the Café Maure above the estuary. Walk down into the medina — small, calm and laid out on a near-grid — and browse the Rue des Consuls. Lunch in a medina restaurant, then spend the afternoon on the Bouregreg: the riverside promenade, the marina, and a small boat or the tram across to Salé and its quiet Bou Inania medersa. Dinner back on the Rabat side.

Day 3 — Rabat: Hassan Tower, the Mausoleum and the museums

Begin at the Hassan Tower, the unfinished 12th-century Almohad minaret above its field of broken columns, and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V facing it across the esplanade — a masterwork of modern Moroccan craft, guarded by royal sentries. In the afternoon, the Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and the archaeological collections (home to the bronzes from Volubilis) fill a cultured few hours. Evening in the cafés of the Ville Nouvelle around Avenue Mohammed V.

Day 4 — Train day trip: Casablanca

Casablanca is under an hour from Rabat by train, so you are there by mid-morning. The unmissable sight is the vast Hassan II Mosque on the Atlantic — one of the few in Morocco open to non-Muslims, on guided tours. Add the Art Deco architecture of the city centre, the old medina and a seafood lunch on the Corniche, then take an afternoon or early-evening train back to your Rabat riad. No packing, no checkout.

Day 5 — Train day trip: Meknès & Volubilis

Meknès, the imperial city of Moulay Ismaïl, is around two hours by train — its monumental Bab Mansour gate, the granaries and stables, and a calmer medina than Fes. From Meknès it is a short drive (we arrange a car for the day) to Volubilis, the best-preserved Roman site in Morocco, with its mosaics, basilica and triumphal arch on a green hillside. Return to Rabat in the evening.

Day 6 — Train day trip: Fes

Fes is around 2.5 hours by train and worth a full day. With a licensed guide you can take in the highlights of Fes el-Bali — the Chouara tanneries from the leather-shop terraces, the Bou Inania Medersa, the Qarawiyyin surrounds and the artisan lanes — and still catch an evening train back to Rabat. It is a long day but an easy one with the rail connection doing the heavy lifting.

Day 7 — Chellah and a slow farewell

Save the most atmospheric corner of Rabat for last. Spend the morning at Chellah — the Roman ruins and Merinid necropolis among the storks and wild gardens — then a final lunch by the river or in the medina before your train or flight out. Seven days, one calm base, a country's worth of memories.

Frequently asked

Is Rabat a good base for a 7-day Morocco trip?

Excellent. Rabat sits at the centre of Morocco's fast rail network, so you can sleep in the same calm riad each night and day-trip out by train: Casablanca in under an hour, Meknès and Volubilis in two, Fes in around 2.5, and the through line reaches Marrakech and Tangier. It removes the constant packing and long road days of a touring loop.

What is the best time of year for this Rabat-based week?

April–May and September–November give mild Atlantic days and the clearest light. Summer is warm but cooled by the ocean breeze, far gentler than inland Morocco. Winter is quiet and occasionally wet but perfectly pleasant for city days and train trips.

Should we fly into Rabat or Casablanca?

Both work. Rabat-Salé Airport handles some international flights and is closest to the city. Casablanca's Mohammed V Airport has the widest connections and a direct train to Rabat in just over an hour. Either way you can be in your Rabat riad the same day.

How much does a private Rabat-based week cost?

With a driver-guide for the local days, comfortable riad accommodation, most meals and transfers, expect US$1,800–3,500 per person depending on group size and category. Using the train for day trips keeps costs down. We quote precisely after understanding your preferences.

Can we do this itinerary independently without a guide?

Yes — Rabat is walkable, the trains are easy to use and punctual, and English gets you far. A licensed guide adds depth at Chellah, the kasbah and in Fes, and a driver simplifies the Meknès–Volubilis day. For a first visit, most guests find a mix of independent and guided days ideal.

What should we pack for a week based in Rabat?

Light layers year-round, a light jacket for the Atlantic breeze, comfortable walking shoes for medina cobbles and the open monuments, and sun protection for Chellah and the train-trip sites. A small daypack is enough for day trips — leave the main luggage in your Rabat riad.
