Street food and fresh produce in the Rabat medina — Rabat Tours

Journal · Money & budgeting

How far does your money actually go in Rabat?

Real daily cost breakdowns, sample budgets in USD, tips for eating and sleeping well for less, and why the capital is one of Morocco's best-value bases.

Rabat is one of Morocco's best-value city breaks — and 'good value' is not the same as 'cheap and cheerful'. Many of the capital's highlights are free or nearly so, the train makes it a low-cost base for day trips, and the dirham stretches a long way. Here is what you can actually expect to spend, at every level.

Rabat's free and near-free highlights

A real advantage of Rabat is how much costs little or nothing. Wandering the medina, the Kasbah of the Udayas lanes, the riverside promenade and the seafront are all free; the Hassan Tower esplanade and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V are free; and even the standout ticketed site, Chellah, costs only around 70 MAD. A day of the city's best sights can run to almost nothing beyond a couple of taxi fares and lunch.

What does accommodation cost in Rabat?

As a capital, Rabat has a broad range — and its riads and mid-range hotels are often calmer and better priced than equivalents in the heavy-tourism cities.

TypePer night (USD)
Hostel dorm (4–8 beds)US$10–16
Simple guesthouse (private room)US$25–45
Mid-range riad or hotel (en-suite, breakfast)US$60–120
Boutique riad below the kasbahUS$120–250
Upscale Ville Nouvelle hotelUS$120–200

How much does food cost in Rabat?

Eating in Rabat is cheap at every level, and the gap between street food and a mid-range restaurant is narrower than in most countries — quality rises faster than price.

  • Street breakfast (msemen or harcha, egg, argan oil, mint tea): 20–35 MAD (US$2–3.50)
  • Harira soup + bread on Rue Souika: 10–15 MAD (US$1–1.50)
  • Set lunch at a local café (no tourist menu): 40–70 MAD (US$4–7)
  • Grilled fish or tagine + salads + mint tea at a medina restaurant: 100–180 MAD (US$10–18)
  • Fine-dining Moroccan or seafood (top riads and restaurants): 350–600 MAD (US$35–60)

The practical tip: step a couple of streets off the obvious tourist terraces near the kasbah and prices drop while quality often rises — you are eating where Rbatis eat.

How much does transport cost?

Rabat is cheap to get around and to leave: the train station is central, the tram links the capital with Salé, and petit taxis are metered and inexpensive.

RouteModeCost (USD)
Casablanca → RabatTrain (2nd class)US$3–5
Rabat → FesTrainUS$8–12

Sample daily budgets in USD

Realistic all-in per-person daily costs for Rabat, based on real prices.

  • Budget backpacker (US$30–50/day): hostel dorm, street food, tram and petit taxis, free sights (kasbah, Hassan Tower, river) and the Chellah ticket.
  • Comfortable independent (US$75–120/day): en-suite guesthouse or simple riad, restaurant lunches and dinners, taxis and the tram, the museums and Chellah.
  • Mid-range with comfort (US$140–200/day): boutique riad with breakfast, two restaurant meals, a guided half-day, a day trip by train.
  • Private guided day (US$220–350/day): licensed guide, private vehicle, most meals, entrances and 24/7 support — comparable to far higher costs in Europe.

Where is it worth spending more?

Rabat rewards a few selective upgrades:

  • Accommodation: the jump from a US$40 guesthouse to a US$90 riad below the kasbah — a tiled courtyard, a roof terrace, breakfast and knowledgeable staff — is enormous.
  • A licensed guide: half a day at Chellah and the kasbah (US$40–60) with a guide unlocks the Roman, Almohad and Andalusian layers you would otherwise miss.
  • Atlantic seafood: a proper grilled-fish meal by the marina or in Salé is worth a small splurge over the cheapest stalls.

Frequently asked

What is a realistic daily budget for Rabat?

A genuine backpacker budget is US$30–50 per day covering a hostel or cheap guesthouse, street food and local cafés, the tram and petit taxis, and the city's many free or low-cost sights. A comfortable mid-range traveller spending on a riad, sit-down restaurants and the museums can expect US$75–120 per day. A fully private Rabat day with Rabat Tours — guide, driver and most meals — runs from US$220–350 per day, still excellent value for the level of service.

What is the cheapest way to reach Rabat and travel onward?

The train is both cheap and convenient: Rabat sits on the main ONCF line, with second-class fares of around US$3–5 from Casablanca and US$8–12 from Fes. This makes Rabat an ideal low-cost base for day trips. Within the city, the tram and metered petit taxis cost only a dirham or two per ride. CTM and Supratours buses cover anywhere the train does not.

How do I avoid overpaying in the Rabat medina?

Bargaining is expected on the Rue des Consuls and in the craft shops — the first price is rarely final. Counter at roughly half to 60% of the opening price, then meet in the middle. Rabat's bargaining is gentle, so it rarely gets tense. The produce and fish markets on Rue Souika and certified cooperatives are fixed-price and useful for calibration.

Is it cheap to eat in Rabat?

Very. Harira soup and bread at a market stall costs 10–15 MAD (about US$1). A set lunch at a local restaurant runs 40–60 MAD (US$4–6). A full evening meal with mint tea at a comfortable medina restaurant is 100–180 MAD (US$10–18). Even fresh Atlantic fish, simply grilled near the port or marina, is inexpensive if you avoid the obvious tourist terraces.

Are accommodation costs low in Rabat?

Reasonable. A hostel dorm bed runs US$10–16; a private room in a guesthouse or simple riad US$25–45; a mid-range en-suite riad or hotel US$60–120; a boutique riad below the kasbah US$120–250. As a capital, Rabat's mid-range and business hotels are well priced midweek, and its riads tend to be calmer and cheaper than equivalents in Marrakech.
