Overview
A quiet day north of the capital: the hilltop Kasbah of Mehdia above the mouth of the Sebou river, the port city of Kenitra, and the protected freshwater lagoon of Sidi Boughaba — one of Morocco's best birdwatching reserves.
North of Salé, past Plage des Nations, the coast reaches the mouth of the Sebou — Morocco's largest river. On the bluff above stands the Kasbah of Mehdia, a fortified port the Portuguese, Spanish and finally the Alaouites all fought over, with the old gate, walls and a long Atlantic beach below. Nearby, Kenitra is a 20th-century port and garrison city, founded in the colonial era as Port-Lyautey.
The day's real treasure is Sidi Boughaba, a long freshwater lagoon set in a belt of cork oak and reeds just inland — a Ramsar-listed wetland and one of the finest birdwatching sites in the country, where marbled ducks, flamingos, herons and many migratory species gather. With a relaxed walk along the shore and a fish lunch by the sea, this is a calm, nature-led escape from the capital that very few foreign visitors know about.

Frequently asked
Questions about this tour.
Is "Mehdia, Kenitra & the Sidi Boughaba Lagoon" private or a group tour?
100% private. Just you and the people you book with — your own Rabat driver-guide, vehicle and pace from start to finish. We never pool travellers.
Can I change the itinerary or start time?
Yes. Every itinerary is a starting point. Shift the start time, swap a site, add the Mohammed VI Museum or a riverside lunch — we'll re-quote in 24 hours and lock the price in writing before any deposit.
Where does the tour start?
We collect you from any hotel or riad in Rabat or Salé, or from Rabat–Salé airport (RBA) or the Rabat-Ville / Rabat-Agdal train stations. Tell us where you're staying and we'll confirm the pickup point.
When should I book?
Most day and half-day tours can be arranged with a few days' notice; weekends and holidays fill faster, so a week ahead is safest.
Is this a good tour for birdwatchers?
Very much so. Sidi Boughaba is a Ramsar-listed wetland and one of Morocco's premier birding sites, especially during the autumn and winter migration. We can pace the day around the lagoon and bring a guide with extra ornithological knowledge on request.
Can we swim at Mehdia?
Mehdia has a long Atlantic beach below the kasbah and is popular with locals in summer, but it is open ocean with currents, so swimming depends on conditions. Many guests come for the kasbah, the lagoon and the lunch rather than to swim.
