Overview
A full day along the Bouregreg: the exterior of the Royal Palace (Dar al-Makhzen) and its mechouar, the marina and river valley, then across the water to Salé — its Great Mosque, the Abu al-Hasan medersa and the old corsair port.
Rabat and Salé are twin cities facing each other across the Bouregreg, and this day joins them. We start at the Royal Palace — the Dar al-Makhzen, the working palace of the King; the grounds and mechouar parade ground are viewed from outside — then follow the river down past the Bouregreg marina and the modern bridges to the Atlantic mouth.
We cross to Salé, historically the more conservative twin and once the base of the Salé Rovers, the corsairs who raided the Atlantic. Here your guide shows you the Great Mosque of Salé and, beside it, the beautiful 14th-century Abu al-Hasan medersa (Medersa of the Merinids), a small jewel of carved cedar, stucco and zellige. We finish at the old fondouks and the river quay before crossing back. A full picture of the capital region as two cities and one river.

Frequently asked
Questions about this tour.
Is "Royal Palace, the Bouregreg & Salé" private or a group tour?
100% private. Just you and the people you book with — your own Rabat driver-guide, vehicle and pace from start to finish. We never pool travellers.
Can I change the itinerary or start time?
Yes. Every itinerary is a starting point. Shift the start time, swap a site, add the Mohammed VI Museum or a riverside lunch — we'll re-quote in 24 hours and lock the price in writing before any deposit.
Where does the tour start?
We collect you from any hotel or riad in Rabat or Salé, or from Rabat–Salé airport (RBA) or the Rabat-Ville / Rabat-Agdal train stations. Tell us where you're staying and we'll confirm the pickup point.
When should I book?
Most day and half-day tours can be arranged with a few days' notice; weekends and holidays fill faster, so a week ahead is safest.
Can we go inside the Royal Palace?
No — the Dar al-Makhzen is the working palace of the King and is not open to the public. We view the monumental gates, the approach and the mechouar from outside, which is impressive in itself, and your guide explains its role and history.
Is Salé worth crossing the river for?
Very much so. Salé is far less visited than Rabat but holds one of Morocco's loveliest small monuments — the 14th-century Abu al-Hasan medersa — plus the Great Mosque and a genuinely lived-in medina with a remarkable corsair history.
