Why Tangier
Tangier sits at the northern end of the Atlantic-capital corridor, where the ocean meets the Mediterranean and Spain is visible across the strait. From Rabat it is the easiest of the great northern cities to reach: the Al Boraq high-speed line links the capital to Tangier in around an hour, making it a natural extension of a Rabat base. Long an international city — administered jointly by foreign powers from 1923 to 1956 — it drew Matisse, Paul Bowles, William Burroughs and the Rolling Stones. Today it is the polished modern gateway to northern Morocco, a short ferry from Tarifa and the hinge between the capital, Chefchaouen and Fes.

The Al Boraq high-speed train links the capital to Tangier in around an hour, which makes it the easiest northern city to add to a Rabat-based trip — and a natural springboard for Chefchaouen or a northern loop through Tétouan.
Two nights is the sweet spot — one day for the kasbah and medina, one for Cap Spartel and a long lunch. It is the most cosmopolitan of Morocco's old cities, and a relaxed companion to the equally unhurried capital an hour south.
