About 2 to 2.5 hours east, the imperial city of Meknès pairs with the Roman ruins of Volubilis nearby. See the monumental Bab Mansour gate and the granaries of Moulay Ismail, then walk Volubilis's mosaics and arches, often combined with the hilltop holy town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun.
Around an hour by frequent train, Casablanca is an easy half- or full-day trip. The vast Hassan II Mosque, partly built over the Atlantic, is the highlight, alongside the art-deco downtown and the Corniche seafront.
Rabat's older twin city sits just across the Bou Regreg, reached by tram or a small boat. Its medina holds the Grand Mosque, a 14th-century Merinid medersa and the Bab Mrisa gate — a quieter, more traditional counterpoint a few minutes from the capital.
About 40 minutes north, Kenitra gives access to Mehdia's wide Atlantic beach and a hilltop kasbah at the mouth of the Sebou river — a relaxed coastal escape away from the monuments.
Near Mehdia, this protected lake and birdwatching reserve shelters migratory waterbirds among cork oaks and reeds — a calm natural detour for early risers and birders, often paired with the Kenitra coast.
Further north (around 1.5 hours), this laid-back fishing village sits beside the Merja Zerga lagoon, one of Morocco's richest birdwatching wetlands, with boat trips out among flamingos and terns.
