Overview
A full day to the whitewashed hill-town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun — one of the holiest places in Morocco, burial place of the founder of the first Moroccan dynasty — paired with the Roman ruins of Volubilis just below.
Moulay Idriss Zerhoun cascades over two hills around the tomb of Moulay Idriss I, the great-great-grandson of the Prophet who founded the first Moroccan Muslim dynasty in the 8th century and is revered as the country's spiritual founder. For centuries non-Muslims could not even stay overnight here; today the town welcomes visitors to its lanes, viewpoints and the famous round minaret, though the shrine itself remains closed to non-Muslims.
We combine the town with Volubilis, the Roman city spread on the plain directly below — basilica, Capitol, triumphal arch and mosaics. Together they make one of the most layered days in northern Morocco: a Roman provincial capital and, on the hill above it, the cradle of Islamic Morocco. An easy and accurate day trip from Rabat.

Frequently asked
Questions about this tour.
Is "Moulay Idriss Zerhoun & Volubilis" private or a group tour?
100% private. Just you and the people you book with — your own Rabat driver-guide, vehicle and pace from start to finish. We never pool travellers.
Can I change the itinerary or start time?
Yes. Every itinerary is a starting point. Shift the start time, swap a site, add the Mohammed VI Museum or a riverside lunch — we'll re-quote in 24 hours and lock the price in writing before any deposit.
Where does the tour start?
We collect you from any hotel or riad in Rabat or Salé, or from Rabat–Salé airport (RBA) or the Rabat-Ville / Rabat-Agdal train stations. Tell us where you're staying and we'll confirm the pickup point.
When should I book?
Most day and half-day tours can be arranged with a few days' notice; weekends and holidays fill faster, so a week ahead is safest.
Can non-Muslims enter the shrine of Moulay Idriss?
No — the mausoleum and shrine of Moulay Idriss I remain closed to non-Muslims, as it is one of the holiest sites in Morocco. Visitors are warmly welcome in the rest of the town, its lanes, viewpoints and cafés, and your guide tells the full story from outside the shrine.
Is the town steep?
Yes — Moulay Idriss is built over two hills and the lanes climb, so there is some uphill walking to reach the best viewpoints. We pace it gently and there are flatter routes and terraces for anyone who prefers to take it easy.
