The day opens at the working palace of the King. You take in the monumental gates, the grand approach and the vast mechouar parade ground from outside — the palace interior is not open to the public — while your guide-historian tells the story of the Alaouite dynasty and the role the Dar al-Makhzen still plays today.
From the palace you follow the Bouregreg, the river that separates Rabat from Salé, down past the modern marina and the bridges to the Atlantic river mouth. It is the natural seam of the capital region, with a riverside lunch by the water before you cross to the far bank.
