The route

The 17th-century capital of Sultan Moulay Ismail, built on a giant scale yet far quieter than Fes or Marrakech. You stand under the monumental Bab Mansour gate, walk the vast Heri es-Souani granaries and stables, see the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail and the great Agdal water basin, and pass through Place el-Hedim at the edge of the medina.
About 30 minutes beyond Meknes lies Volubilis, the largest and best-preserved Roman site in the country and the old capital of Mauretania Tingitana. Your guide-historian walks you through the basilica, the Capitol, the triumphal arch of Caracalla and the famous in-situ floor mosaics of the patrician houses — all under open sky on the plain.
On the hill directly above Volubilis sits Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, one of Morocco's holiest towns and the burial place of Moulay Idriss I, founder of the first Moroccan dynasty. The whitewashed lanes, viewpoints and the unusual round minaret are easy to add to the afternoon; the shrine itself stays closed to non-Muslims.

Meknes gives you imperial Morocco on a grand scale with a fraction of the crowds, and Volubilis is calmer than almost any major Roman site in the Mediterranean. A gentler, quieter alternative to a packed day in Fes.

Meknes is roughly 2 to 2.5 hours from Rabat on fast motorway, with Volubilis about 30 minutes further on — around 140 to 150 km each way. A typical day leaves at about 08:00 and is back in the early evening.
